Supporting Your Child at Home

A Simple Guide for Parents New to Early Years Education

Whether you’re just starting out or working with limited experience or resources, there are many meaningful ways to support your child’s development at home. Here’s a friendly and practical guide to help you along the way.

Area of Learning Support
Communication and Language

Enjoy using your voices together during play, in everyday situations, and through conversation. Model speaking in full sentences to help your child learn how to express themselves clearly.

  • Narrate what you or your child is doing as you go about your day.
  • Change your pitch and tone to highlight new or longer words.
  • Make up silly sounds or nonsense babble—have fun playing with your voices!

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Help your child begin to understand simple emotions such as happy, sad, angry, or feeling unwell. Sharing stories is a great way to explore these feelings together.

Recommended books:

•Taking a Bath with the Dog and Other Things that Make Me Happy by Scott Menchin

•The Way I Feel by Janan Cain

•Today I Feel Silly: And Other Moods That Make My Day by Jamie Lee Curtis

•How Are You Peeling? Foods with Moods by Saxton Freymann

•Feelings by Aliki

•Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst

•I Like Myself by Karen Beaumont

•I’m Gonna Like Me: Letting Off a Little Self-Esteem by Jamie Lee Curtis

Physical Development

Fine Motor Skills: Support hand-eye coordination and strengthen finger and hand muscles through activities like:

•Weaving, cutting, cooking, play dough, drawing, and sticking.

Gross Motor Skills: Encourage whole-body movement to build flexibility, coordination, and agility.

•Try climbing, dancing, jumping, running, and other active play.

Literacy

Help your child understand that print carries meaning—from signs like McDonald’s to words in books and writing.

•Share and enjoy books and stories together. You can even start creating your own!

•A trip to the library is always a lovely outing.

Encourage your child to give meaning to their marks by writing cards, invitations, postcards, pictures, wanted posters, and lists together.

Mathematics

Make maths fun and part of everyday life.

•Play counting games and sing maths-themed songs.

•Talk about shapes, height, weight, capacity, length, and positional language during daily routines.

•Sorting activities and treasure hunts work brilliantly in any setting.

Understanding the World

Spend time together outdoors and explore nature.

•Encourage your child to care for a plant or pet.

•Capture and talk about special events throughout the year using photos or by creating scrapbooks.

Expressive Arts and Design

Create and build together using open-ended materials like blocks and recycled items.

•Support imaginative play with characters, puppets, or soft toys.

•Role-play familiar experiences such as shopping or daily routines—especially helpful if these are new to your child.

You’re doing a wonderful job just by being present and engaged. Little moments of connection go a long way. Let me know if you’d like printable versions, activity ideas, or more book suggestions!

 Opening Times and Charges

Sessions and Fees

We offer places for 15-hour funding (morning or afternoon) and 30 hour funded places (3+ full days), you may not wish to utilise your full funding entitlement as we understand that sessions may need to be flexible to support work schedules and transition your child into the setting. However, we do ask that you attend a minimum of 3 sessions per week as you transition up to your selected childcare option by the end of your first term.

All children attending full-days access lunch-time club which takes place in the pre-school building between 11.45am-12.30pm and is charged at £3 ( Lunch-time Supervision). Children can bring in sandwiches or have a hot lunch at a charge of £2 extra.

All Little Seedlings sessions are charged in advance and can be managed on My Child At School ( MCAS).
