French

INTENT

At Priorslee, the intent of our  French curriculum is to provide all students with a strong foundation in the French language and culture. Our aim is to foster a love for learning languages, develop linguistic proficiency, and promote cultural understanding. We believe that by equipping our students with the skills and knowledge to communicate effectively in French, we are preparing them to be global citizens who can thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

IMPLEMENTATION

Our French curriculum is designed to be comprehensive, covering the four key language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It follows a logical progression that builds upon and revisits previously covered topics, ensuring that concepts are reinforced and consolidated over time. The curriculum is aligned with the National Curriculum for Modern Foreign Languages, incorporating its objectives and expectations.

The French curriculum is delivered through an interactive resource called ‘Rigolo’. This enables children to benefit from hearing the words pronounced correctly, practise songs and see cartoon videos of conversations. This enables our teachers to use a range of engaging and interactive teaching methods, including songs, games, role-plays, and multimedia resources, to create a stimulating learning environment.

French is taught across KS2 and children will revisit previous vocabulary in lessons to consolidate new words and phrases. They will build on their knowledge to have conversations with their peers and adults, developing their speaking & listening skills and confidence..

Impact

Our children demonstrate a secure understanding of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation, and can confidently communicate in French. Through our curriculum, students are equipped with the skills and knowledge to access further study in French at secondary school or pursue their linguistic interests independently.

To monitor progress and inform teaching, we conduct regular and ongoing formative assessments throughout the year. These assessments take various forms, such as verbal questioning, written tasks, and listening exercises. We also provide timely feedback to students, highlighting their strengths and areas for improvement. This allows us to adapt our teaching strategies and cater to the individual needs of each student.

We foster a positive attitude towards language learning, encouraging students to embrace challenges, take risks, and develop resilience. Children actively participate in lessons and show a genuine interest in the French language and culture.

Our French curriculum plays a crucial role in developing cultural understanding and promoting global citizenship. Through the exploration of French literature, music, traditions, and customs, students gain a deeper appreciation for the diversity of cultures and languages. They develop an awareness of their place in the global community and the importance of intercultural respect and empathy. This fosters attitudes that contribute to an inclusive, harmonious, and respectful school community.
